How to use a marathon pacing chart
A marathon pacing chart turns your target finish time into checkpoints you can use during training or race day. Enter a finish time, choose kilometers or miles, and select an even, negative or positive split strategy.
The chart shows cumulative clock times at every 5 km mark and every mile, including the finish. The classic reference marks are useful at a glance: sub-3:00 needs 4:16/km (6:52/mile), sub-3:30 needs 4:58/km (8:00/mile), sub-4:00 needs 5:41/km (9:09/mile), sub-4:30 needs 6:24/km (10:18/mile), and sub-5:00 needs 7:07/km (11:26/mile).
Even pacing keeps the same pace throughout. A negative split makes the second half faster; most world records are run as slight negative splits. A positive split makes the first half faster, which usually happens by accident rather than as a plan.
