What is HYROX and how does a race actually work?

HYROX is a standardized indoor fitness race: eight 1-kilometer runs, each one followed by a fixed functional workout station, always in the same order. Every event worldwide uses the identical format, so a finish time set in Hamburg means the same thing as one set in Dallas.

What is HYROX, and what does the name stand for

HYROX isn't an acronym, and the company has never explained the name. The "hybrid rockstar" origin story that circulates in forums has never been confirmed by the founders, so treat it as folklore. What the format states plainly is the hybrid part — endurance and strength inside one event. You can't win it as a pure runner, and you can't win it as a pure lifter.

The company was founded in Hamburg in 2017 by Christian Toetzke and Moritz Fürste, and the first event ran there in 2018. It now runs as a global season in arenas and convention halls. Elites and complete first-timers race the same course on the same day, at the same weights within their division. Nobody has to qualify to enter — you buy a slot in a start wave, the way you would for a road race.

What a HYROX race consists of

Eight kilometers of running and eight stations, alternating. You run first, then hit station one, then run again. The eighth run is followed by wall balls, and the hundredth rep is the finish.

# Station Work Men (Open) Women (Open)
1 SkiErg 1,000 m
2 Sled Push 50 m (4 × 12.5 m) 152 kg 102 kg
3 Sled Pull 50 m (4 × 12.5 m) 103 kg 78 kg
4 Burpee Broad Jumps 80 m bodyweight bodyweight
5 Rowing 1,000 m
6 Farmers Carry 200 m 2 × 24 kg 2 × 16 kg
7 Sandbag Lunges 100 m 20 kg 10 kg
8 Wall Balls 100 reps 6 kg to a 3.00 m target 4 kg to a 2.70 m target

Sled figures are the total load, sled included — not plates stacked on top. The SkiErg and the rower are Concept2 machines, the same ones sitting in most gyms, and both come preset to damper 6 — you're free to change that as often as you like.

How the race works: chip timing, judges, and the roxzone

Waves set off in blocks through the day, each racer carrying a timing chip. The running is laps of a marked indoor loop on flat, hard floor, and how many laps make up each kilometer depends on the size of the hall — anywhere from one to five. The loop is divided into a fast lane on the inside, required for anyone holding 4:00/km or quicker, and a wider running lane outside it.

Between every run and every station you pass through the roxzone, the transition area. That clock never stops, and roxzone time adds up to several minutes over a race for most age-groupers.

Judges hold the standards at each station. On wall balls the hips have to drop below the knees and the ball has to strike the target — no warnings there, it's a rep or a no-rep. Lunges need the trailing knee to touch the floor, burpee broad jumps need the chest on the ground and a two-footed takeoff and landing, and the sled has to cross the line completely. Penalties are specific: a missed run lap costs three to seven minutes depending on the venue, entering or leaving the roxzone through the wrong arch is two minutes, and missing a station or a full kilometer is a disqualification.

HYROX divisions: Open, Pro, Doubles, and Relay

Four ways into the same course:

  • HYROX — the standard division, usually called Open. The weights in the table above.
  • HYROX Pro — same distances, same reps, heavier loads. Men push 202 kg, pull 153 kg, carry 2 × 32 kg, lunge with 30 kg, and throw a 9 kg ball. Women Pro race the men's Open loads exactly: 152 kg push, 103 kg pull, 2 × 24 kg carry, 20 kg sandbag, 6 kg ball.
  • HYROX Doubles — two athletes run all eight kilometers together and split each station however they like, one working while the other rests. Running ahead of your partner costs the team a one-minute penalty.
  • HYROX Team Relay — four athletes, each running 2 × 1 km and doing the two matching stations. Women's, men's, and mixed teams.

Results are ranked overall and by age group. World Championship slots are handed out on age-group placing at regular races and roll down to the next finisher if one is declined, so there's no separate qualifying trial. At the very top, a points-based Elite 15 wave races its own series.

Why every HYROX is the same race everywhere

The fixed order and fixed loads are the entire point. Because nothing about the work changes between cities or seasons, your time is a number you can chase for years, and training for it is unusually literal — you can rehearse the exact race in a normal gym and the splits transfer. A station-by-station timer like Hyrox Workout, a HYROX workout timer app for iPhone and Apple Watch, keeps each segment on its own clock, so the split from a training simulation lines up against the same split on race day.

The one thing that isn't identical is the room — athletes talk about fast rooms and slow rooms. Floor surface changes how a sled moves, and a tighter loop means more corners per kilometer, so expect a couple of minutes of spread between venues.

How HYROX differs from obstacle races and CrossFit competitions

It isn't an obstacle course race: no mud, no walls, no rope traverse, and the burpees are a station in their own right rather than a punishment for a failed obstacle. It's indoors on flat floor, and everyone in a division does identical work.

It also isn't a CrossFit competition. The defining feature there is that you don't learn the workout until shortly before you do it; HYROX publishes its workout permanently, and there are no barbells, muscle-ups, or handstands. What it asks for instead is a large aerobic engine and the willingness to keep running on legs that have just been emptied — eight separate times.

A race from the athlete's point of view

You're corralled a few minutes before your wave, SkiErgs waiting in front of you. The first kilometer feels easy, and that's the trap; nearly everyone goes out too fast. The SkiErg moves the load onto your shoulders and lungs. Run two, then the sleds, which decide the race for most people — a heavy push buys oxygen debt you spend the next three kilometers repaying.

Burpee broad jumps are the low point, 80 meters of getting off the floor. The rower comes as relief if you settle into a rhythm. The farmers carry is quick while your grip holds. Then 100 meters of sandbag lunges, which plenty of finishers rate as the hardest station, and one last kilometer to the wall.

The wall balls are the part people remember: 100 reps in front of a crowd on legs that are already gone. Break them into small sets from the first rep and you'll beat the athlete who tries thirty unbroken and then stands there staring at the target.

FAQ

How long does a HYROX race take?

Most of the field finishes between roughly 1:15 and 2:00 — nearer 1:30 through the middle of the men's field and 1:50 for the women's, while the fastest men in the world are inside 54 minutes. A first-timer with a reasonable base should plan on 1:30 to 2:00.

Do you need to be fit to enter HYROX?

There's no qualifying standard and no skill test — you just buy a slot. You do need to cover 8 kilometers on foot with breaks and move the station loads slowly. Most people who finish comfortably have spent a few months running regularly and doing loaded carries, lunges, and squats.

How much running is there in a HYROX?

Eight kilometers, in eight separate 1-kilometer efforts, plus whatever the roxzone transitions add on the day. It's never one continuous run, which is why road-running pace is a poor predictor of a HYROX time.

What's the difference between HYROX and HYROX Pro?

Same course, same distances, same reps — heavier loads on the sleds, farmers carry, sandbag, and wall ball. Women Pro use the men's Open weights, and Men Pro go a step above that again. The divisions are ranked separately.

Can you do HYROX with a partner?

Yes. Doubles pairs run all eight kilometers side by side and divide each station's work however they choose, with one partner working at a time. Team Relay splits the race across four athletes, each covering two runs and their two matching stations.
