What is the Roxzone in HYROX?
The Roxzone is the transition area you cross between every run and every station in a HYROX race. It's timed inside your finish time, and it's the one segment nobody trains. For most age-group athletes that's four to seven minutes of walking, queuing, and drinking water.
What is the Roxzone in a HYROX race?
A HYROX race is eight 1 km runs alternating with eight functional stations, always starting with a run. The Roxzone is the marked area between the running course and the station lanes. You come off the track into it, cross to your lane, work, then cross back out to the next run.
That's about fifteen crossings — eight in, seven out, with the last set of wall balls feeding straight to the finish. None of that transit counts toward the 8 km of official running. All of it counts toward your time, which is the part most descriptions of the race format skip.
The transit isn't standardized. A compact venue might put the sled lanes a few steps off the track; a big arena can make it a genuine 60- or 80-meter walk with a corner in it. Course layouts are usually shared before the event, and reading yours is the cheapest Roxzone work you'll ever do.
How Roxzone time is measured
Your results page splits the race into three buckets: run total, workout total, and Roxzone. The Roxzone number isn't clocked directly the way a run split is — it's the leftover. Take your finish time, subtract the eight run splits and the eight station splits, and what remains is your Roxzone.
That subtraction is why it's easy to ignore. Nothing beeps, nobody shouts a transition split at you, and you find out hours later reading the results.
It also means everything that isn't running or working lands in that bucket: the walk to the sled lane, the wait if every lane is busy, chalking up, drinking, finding your judge, standing over the sandbag deciding whether you're ready.
What a good HYROX Roxzone time looks like
Judge it as a share of your finish time — five minutes means something very different at 60 minutes than at 110. In practice it tends to land somewhere around 5–8% of the total. The bands below are planning rules of thumb, not published standards; check them against your own results page and your division's average finish times.

Sitting above the band for your finish time is good news: that time comes back through behavior rather than fitness, which makes it the fastest gain available to a first- or second-race athlete.
Where the minutes actually go
Four repeat offenders, roughly in order of cost:
- Taking water at every chance. A cup and two mouthfuls is maybe 15 seconds. Do that after all eight runs and you've spent two minutes on water you didn't need across an hour of work.
- Walking instead of jogging. Over a 60-meter transit, a walk costs roughly 20 seconds more than an easy jog. Fifteen crossings later that's five minutes.
- Hunting for a lane. Arriving at the sleds without knowing where you're headed costs 10–20 seconds of scanning, more if you commit to a lane someone else reaches first.
- Deciding in the zone. Working out your wall ball rep scheme at the line is planning that belonged to the week before.
How to shrink your Roxzone
- Read the course layout. Learn where each station sits relative to the track, and which direction you exit.
- Pick your lane on approach, not on arrival. Scan while you're still moving, commit, go.
- Jog every transition. Slow counts. Stopped doesn't.
- Plan one or two drink stops for the whole race instead of taking every one.
- Know your rep and rest scheme per station before you start, lunge stops and wall ball breakdown included.
- Set your kit before the gun: belt on, laces double-knotted, gloves decided.

Fitting it into your HYROX pacing strategy
Most people build a HYROX pace chart from eight run targets and eight station targets, add them up, then finish several minutes slower than the arithmetic promised. The chart is missing a column. If you want 1:20 on the clock, budget the Roxzone first — call it five minutes — and pace everything else against the 1:15 that's left.
Training it is unglamorous: run your sessions in the order you'll race the stations, put a real 40–60 meter transit between elements, and never pause the clock while you move.
